A woman previously residing at a female recovery facility in California allegedly took a stolen van and led a prolonged police chase culminating with her traveling across the international boundary into Mexico on Monday.

Vehicle Theft Reported from Recovery Residence

As stated in a law enforcement statement, a another female, Nicolle Walters, forty-five years old, notified authorities that her gray minivan from 2004 was stolen, along with her vehicle key. Walters, who manages two female recovery residences, identified the alleged thief as Alyssa Wilson at Diana’s House Sober Living, located approximately 60 minutes north-west of LA.

“The keys were taken from my manager’s handbag. I happened to pull up just as it was occurring,” she said, noting that the minivan is designated for the sobriety home’s tasks.

High-Speed Pursuit Develops Across Several Regions

Authorities tracked the van about 12 miles north in Simi Valley, where they attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the suspect refused to stop and accelerated rapidly. She attained speeds of about 90mph on the 118 freeway until the chase proceeded into Los Angeles county. At that juncture, Ventura county authorities handed over the operation to the CHP once the driver merged onto the 405 freeway heading south.

“This one is particularly unusual in the context of the traffic conditions enabling individuals to continue to remain on the freeway and extend this chase,” commented a public information officer from the local law enforcement agency.

The suspect allegedly avoided all the tire-deflation devices tossed on the road by authorities, as documented in footage from above.

International Getaway and Aftermath

The chase finally arrived at the international border by early afternoon, prompting the highway patrol to terminate the chase due to legal limitations.

Walters stated on Tuesday that the vehicle was located in the Mexican city of Tijuana and that she was coordinating with the authorities to recover the vehicle.

“Ultimately, I’m not worried about the car,” Walters said. “I’m relieved aware she wasn’t hurt. The car is easily substituted.”

The sober living home owner, who has run the recovery residence since last October, recognizes that the journey toward sobriety from substance abuse and trauma is often non-linear.

“This is a mental health and substance abuse crisis,” Walters emphasized. “There is a need for additional assistance. It is essential to provide greater resources for those that are facing challenges.”

“Recovery can be messy,” she added.
