Hurricane the storm is predicted to escalate to a rare category five storm as it shifts in the direction of Jamaica, causing life-threatening flash flooding and rock falls.

This weather system, which recorded winds of up to 120 mph as of 0600 Greenwich Mean Time, is currently turning north-west in the Caribbean and is anticipated to reach land by early next week, according to meteorological authorities.

Alerts of blackouts and damage to infrastructure have been announced as this storm produces up to 30 inches of precipitation and storm surges as high as 4m above normal levels. "Take cover without delay," residents have been urged.

The cyclone is the 13th cyclone in this year's Atlantic hurricane season, which usually concludes in November.

Category Five Hurricane Threat

A category five storm is the most powerful category, with sustained winds of at least 252 km/h.

While the hurricane is expected to weaken to a Category 4 cyclone before making landfall on Jamaica, authorities said there was "almost no noticeable change in the general consequences" upon making contact with land, and that the cyclone will be "just as powerful" when it strikes the country.

Critical Readiness Measures

With tropical storm-level gusts and precipitation predicted to begin well before it crosses central Jamaica - possibly even the city of Kingston - advisories state that "preparations should be rushed to completion".

"An extended timeframe of destructive gusts and intense precipitation have begun and will cause severe and deadly flash flooding and numerous landslides," advised meteorological officials.

The country's head of government the official stated: "I know that there are numerous residents who are concerned, who are very concerned, and with good reason: you should be concerned.

"Yet the most effective method to manage worry and any apprehension and anxiety is to be prepared."

Residents are being advised to secure their homes with sand barriers and timber panels, and to stock up on basic necessities.

Regional Impact

Warnings are also ongoing for areas in Haiti such as the main city, Port au Prince, the adjacent nation and Cuba's eastern region, where Melissa is expected to bring similar effects by the midweek period.

Landslides currently triggered by the hurricane have resulted in two fatalities in Haiti, according to local authorities.

Projected Trajectory

The hurricane is predicted to move across Cuba by the middle of the week before passing across the Greater Antilles and out into the Atlantic Ocean.

By the moment it makes contact with Cuba, it is forecast to have weakened to a Category 3 hurricane.
